Race can be played alone with up to four people locally at one time. It is not restricted to a specific cup, so racers can pick any course (if enabled).

In addition, the Shine Thief and Bob-Omb Blast battle games from Mario Kart: Double Dash!! return as playable options in Battle Mode along with Renegade Roundup, a new mode. This game includes the Inklings as new playable characters along with three returning characters from the previous games: Dry Bones, King Boo, and Bowser Jr., along with a fourth one ( Birdo) who was added later.
